Fantastic Creatures of Fortune and Harmony (Seosudo, 서수도)
The term Seosudo refers to a genre of images from the Joseon Dynasty (1392–1910) that includes depictions of animals with auspicious and mythical meaning. These creatures were attributed special spiritual power, so the images were understood as visual expressions of wishes for good fortune, long life, harmony, and protection.
A central feature of Seosudo painting is the depiction of animals together with their offspring. This image form symbolises family harmony as well as the wish for fertility and many descendants. Common motifs include the Qilin, a giraffe-like mythical creature symbolizing peaceful and just order, and the Haetae, believed to possess moral judgment and to protect against destructive forces like fire. Additionally, lucky fruits appear, including the peach as a sign of longevity and the Buddha’s hand citron as a symbol of blessing and prosperity.
Seosudo was widespread both in the royal court environment and in everyday culture. The depictions express the collective hopes of the people of the Joseon era for a peaceful, orderly, and harmonious life in the form of fantastic creatures.
