ARTLIA's art prints are produced according to standardized paper and canvas formats.

Depending on the aspect ratio of the original artwork and the chosen format, it may happen that the edges of the image are slightly adjusted to achieve a harmonious overall effect and high print quality.

For canvas prints, the ARTLIA team ensures that the main motif is placed as fully as possible on the front side. The side frame areas are continued in color and style to match the original image.

This is a deliberate and common production step with which the ARTLIA team ensures the aesthetic quality of each artwork.

Waiting by Edgar Degas

  • Artist: Edgar Degas
  • Creation: around 1879
  • Technique: Pastel on paper
  • Dimensions: approx. 70 × 50 cm (several versions exist)
  • Related works including at the Musée d'Orsay

Work Description

The picture shows a young ballerina backstage, bending over to adjust her pointe shoe or ankle. Next to her sits a person dressed in black – presumably a mother or supervisor – with a closed umbrella on a bench.

Degas focuses not on the glamorous stage moment, but on the phase of waiting and preparation. The posture is not idealized, but natural and almost unnoticed. This creates a quiet, tense atmosphere immediately before the performance.

The pastel technique allows for a multi-layered color modulation: the tutu appears soft and translucent, while the background is kept flat in warm ochre tones. The asymmetrical composition and the cropped pictorial space show the influence of photographic ways of seeing.

Why is the work famous?

1. Modern Choice of Motif
Degas did not choose the spectacular stage performance, but the inconspicuous moment of waiting. This focus on the “in-between moment” is considered radically modern.

2. Central Theme of His Œuvre
Ballet scenes were a main motif for Degas. This work condenses his intense engagement with movement, body study, and spatial structure.

3. Masterful Pastel Technique
Degas elevated pastel from a drawing medium to a fully-fledged painterly technique. Through layering and smudging, he created depth and nuanced light effects.

4. Unusual Composition
The cropped perspective and the lateral placement of the figures appear almost photographic and give the image spontaneity.

5. Social Subtext
The juxtaposition of the young dancer and the darkly dressed companion subtly refers to the social structures of the Parisian ballet scene in the 19th century.

The work is therefore considered exemplary of Degas’ contribution to modern painting: it does not show the spectacle, but the quiet, tension-filled time before it.
